The Paradox that is Will

Recently Will came up to me, gave me a big hug, and said "Mama, some people are worth melting for."

Me: Huh?...
Will: You know, Olaf said that in Frozen.

Me: You know Olaf was a snowman and if he melts he dies. So he's saying someone he loves is worth dying for.
Will: I know. Mama, you're worth melting for.

And then *I* melted...

Until a couple of days ago when we heard a Canadian Blood Services ad on the radio looking for blood donors. I used to donate, but now I'm ineligible; I believe people should give if they can.

Me: Will, I hope when you're older you'll consider donating blood. There are lots of sick and injured people who could use it. They don't take very much and your body makes more.
Will: I don't think so. It sounds scary.

Me: Well, it wouldn't be until you're an adult. It really doesn't hurt. And they don't take very much. Your body wouldn't even miss it.
Will: No.

Me: What if *I* was dying and needed blood. Would you give me just a bit?
Will: No.

Me: What?! You wouldn't give me just a bit?? I might die.
Will: There are other people around who can give blood.

Me (crossing slightly over to crazy): Ok. What if we were on a spaceship? And there was only you and me? Would you give me blood then?
Will: I don't think so.

Me: What if I was the only one who knew how to fly the spaceship? If I died, the spaceship would crash and you'd die too, you know. You'd really be saving yourself.
Will: Still no.

WTH?

Outer Space

Will: Mom, how come we never go into outer space?
Me: Well...how would we get there?

Will: On a spaceship!
Me: Do you *have* a spaceship? Because I don't.

Will: Why don't we just go find one and get on it?
Me: Because they're not like buses. You can't just find one, put a few quarters in and hop on.

Will: Well, how do you get to go on one?...
Me: You need to be an astronaut.

Will: How do you get to be an astronaut?
Me: Well, you probably have to study to be an engineer or a physicist or something like that.*

*My knowledge is entirely based on the Big Bang Theory.

Me: Also, I think maybe if you're a really good pilot, you could be an astronaut.**

**I clearly have no idea, but it would seem reasonable to me.

Will: Oh - ok. So if you're not a good pilot, then you just fly planes?

OMG - I hope not!

Frozen

I'm thinking someone's becoming a bit too obsessed with Frozen.

After half an hour in bed, Mia gets up because she just *has* to sing "Let it Go" to me. I patiently indulge this; after all, we all get a song stuck in our heads once in a while. But will she go back to bed afterwards? No.

So I repeated my request in her own Frozen language:

Let us go! Let us go!
Let's go straight up to bed!
Let u...s go! Let us go!
Time to rest your tired head.

I don't care if you scream at me.
Let the tantrum rage on!
The noise never bothered me anyway.

She went to bed after that. I like to think her sense of humor + my singing in her language made her see reason and go to bed. But it may have just been her needing to escape my singing.

Mia is in Will's way.

Will: Mia, can you please move?

She doesn't....

Will: Mia - you're in my way. Could you move?

Still no movement.

Will (singing): Mia, you better move. You better dance. It's going down. I'm yelling Timber.

OMG - that kid cracks me up!

And if you don't get the reference...

Will has recently discovered Star Wars and is obsessed with light sabers. Using a pool noodle lying around the house with a bit of duct tape slapped on for a hilt plus a bit of hockey tape to decorate the hilt, we made a light saber.

Yesterday was Show and Tell and he planned to bring his light saber.

Me: Maybe we can practice Show and Tell? Your teacher will want to know what it is, where you got it, what you do with it...
Will: Ok! I'll tell them it's my light saber.

Me: Ok, good. Where did you get it?
Will: I got it from the store.

Me: What? No you didn't. We made it. You were there. It didn't come from the store.
Will: The pool noodle came from the store. The duct tape came from the store. The hockey tape came from the store. It. Came. From. The. Store.

Hard to argue with logic like that.

Time to catch up!

Mia lost another tooth today. And just before bed, she dashes off a quick note to the Tooth Fairy to leave with her tooth. Clearly mistaking the Tooth Fairy for Santa, it's actually a request for the Tooth Fairy to please leave her some pixie dust.

Me: Umm...if the Tooth Fairy actually leaves you pixie dust, what do you plan to do with it?
Mia: Fly!

Of course...how could I not know that?

And then there's Will...

It's Show and Tell day at preschool. They were asked to bring what they got from Santa/favorite Christmas present. And here's my boy, getting ready to demonstrate the stapler - yes, you read that right, a stapler - that... he got from Santa.

You can imagine how that conversation went when he was sitting on Santa's lap with Mia in Disneyland...

Santa: And what would you like for Christmas, Mia?
Mia: A Nintendo 3DS!

Santa: A very popular choice! And what about you, Will?
Will: A stapler.

Santa (clearly thinking he misheard): A skateboard?
Mia: That's not what he said. Tell him again, Will!
Will: A STAPLER.

Santa: A stapler?
Will: Yes! A stapler!

Santa: A stapler...well...hmmm... (clearly at a loss)

I hear all the kids in his class now want a stapler after his demo (and then the demo of REMOVING staples with the bonus stapler remover Santa gave him).Photo: And then there's Will...
